What have we achieved so far?
We first talked about the upgrade to the track between La Mairena and Ojén. I drove along the track on Saturday 20 August to see the condition before work started and I took a video of the drive. It took 35 minutes and in places the condition of the surface was very bad. The mayor informed me that work had started and would probably take about 2 weeks. The result would be a surface that a normal car could drive on with care but probably not suitable for cars with low ground clearance.
The video of my drive on 20 August can be downloaded from this link
The path can be seen on this link
The green sections are aleady concrete, the orange sections are a track in fairly good condition and the red section is a bad surface.
I drove along the path again today (Tuesday 23 August) and had a chat with the driver of the machine working on the improvement. He has already done a good job and the worst parts that I encountered on Saturday are now much improved. The surface will be compressed earth, it will not be gravel. If you look at the map in the link above, you will see the current situation. The red part is too narrow for the machine and he said he would not be working on that small section. But the rest of the track can be driven comfortably in my Skoda Fabia at about 30kms/hr with no problem. The surface will be compresse earth
However, he agreed with me that care is needed in some parts where there is no boundary barrier and a vertical drop if you go off the road. And of course at night there are no street lights, this is a mountain track. He expects to finish the work by the end of next week.
You can see the route on Google Earth with this kml file
We then discussed the works due to be done in Calle Madrid. The mayor explained that he had promised this would be completed before the children went back to school at the German College and College Ecos. However, bureaucratic procedures outside his control had held up the start of the work. He made a phone call during our conversation to emphasize the necessity to complete work before college resumes but the reply was that some paperwork had still not been completed by the company doing the work. The mayor shares our frustration in this matter.
Next on the agenda was the new street lights in La Mairena. The mayor explained that the budget for this work has been finalized and will be presented to the relevant EU body this week. The project covers all street lights in the whole of Ojén, including all streets in La Mairena, and the total budget is 1.646.000€. Low usage LEDs will be used and they can be programmed remotely to reduce or increase the level of light as required. There will also be an electric car recharging point installed in Plaza Alemán.
I drew the attention of the mayor to the bad state of the recycling containers at the beginning of Calle Miguel de Cervantes. He had not been informed of this and has immediately notified the relevant authorities and sent them the photos I had taken. (Action was immediate: today 24 August at 10:15 he notified me that the glass container had been emptied yesterday (23 August) and all the bottles on the floor removed.) The recycling containers are not the responsibility of Ojén Town Hall but are the responsibility of the Mancomunidad. The photos are as follows:
The mayor repeated his wish to meet with the Upgrade core team, answer their questions and outline his plans for La Mairena. I told him I would inform Eva Vestlie Kastensson and I was sure that a meeting could be arranged when she returned from Sweden.
